The KelTec KS7 - Bullpups Bite

12/08/2022

KelTec loves making weird and innovative firearms. Their rifles, pistols, and shotguns tend to be unique weapons. The KelTec KS7 is their latest 12 gauge shotgun. The KS7 is my first experience with a KelTec shotgun, and admittedly, as a shotgun nerd, I was excited. The KS7 is a bullpup design with a lot of love to give.

Why A Bullpup?

Bullpups are great for saving space. A shotgun works best when it's short, and the KS7 is superbly short and doesn't require a tax stamp. The short design makes it perfect for home defense, and the KS7 is a short 26.10 inches. That is short as you can legally get without becoming an NFA weapon. This makes the gun perfect for inside the house use due to it's increased mobility.

Breaking Down the KS7

The KS7 gains its name from the fact it holds seven rounds of 12 gauge and is a derivative of the classic KSG. Unlike the KSG, it has a single tube and simplified design, and a much lower price tag. It retains the pump-action design for simplicity and reliability. The KS7 sports a futuristic design, but incorporates an old school cool carry handle. The carry handle serves a few purposes and is removable should the end-user want to replace it.

At the Range

The KS7 weighs a mere 5.9 pounds, and that's super light for a shotgun. Lightweight means more recoil, so proper recoil mitigation techniques are a must when laying down lead with the KS7. The KS7's bullpup design does make it very quick to get on target and to move between targets. All the weight is to the rear, and that makes transferring and maneuvering between targets quick and easy.

The ergonomics are well thought out. The pump release is ambidextrous, the safety is a massive block, and the pump is well textured. Because it's a bullpup, reloading it can be challenging. The reloading ports sit right below your cheek weld, and it's a formidable reach. The pump features an integrated handguard to prevent your hand from sliding off the pump. If you don't watch your thumb placement, the handguard will strike your thumb, and it's not nice.

The length of pull is 13 inches, which is relatively short. That's a good thing because most shotgun makers are obsessed with these crazy long length of pulls. 13 inches is perfect for most shooters.

The gun also runs quite reliably and has no issues loading, extracting, and ejecting 2.75 inch and 3-inch shells. The pump action is smooth, and the action is easy to accentuate.

The KS7 and it's massive carry handle is where the sights are located. The front sight is a green fiber optic triangle that absolutely massive. It's weird, but weird doesn't mean bad. The big, high visibility front sight is quick and easy to find, and that's great for a shotgun. Shotguns are all about speed, and these sights are fast. The only downside is the big sight makes it harder to use slugs with precision at slug ranges.

The carry handle also features M-LOK slots for adding accessories. It's a neat feature that's quite handy for mounting lights and accessories. The magazine tube features cutouts to allow you to see how many rounds you have left, and it's quite handy. The bright white follower is easy to see and shows through the witness holes well.

Final Verdict

The KS7 is an interesting shotgun with an interesting manual of arms. It takes some training to become accustomed to, but the time and ammo investment is well worth the price of admission. Seven rounds in such a small package is plenty impressive, and the short shotgun is perfect for inside the house or as a truck gun. The low price tag is also a nice feature; check one out today and experience the joy of a bullpup shotgun.
