SIG P365 Airgun

12/08/2022

If I’ve learned anything about being a gun owner, it’s that the market is finicky. Sometimes ammo goes dry, and it can be tough to keep your skills sharp. Luckily, when that’s the case, you can turn to some alternative options. This includes dry fire, laser-fired devices, and airguns. Yep, airguns. SIG, in particular, pays a lot of attention to the airgun market. Their ever-popular P365 pistol has been successfully replicated as an airgun—specifically a 4.5 mm BB gun.

The SIG P365 Air gun is almost a perfect 1 for 1 replica for the real P365. The airgun fits P365 holsters perfectly, and in terms of length, height, and width, it’s a perfect replica. It is about 4 ounces lighter than the real thing. At first glance, the P365 Air Gun looks exactly like an actual firearm. It makes a perfect stand-in for the P365.

Air Gun Training

This opens up training opportunities in more situations than one. Sure, when ammo is expensive and hard to find, the air gun is a great thing to train with. It’s also perfect for teaching new shooters gun safety, basic marksmanship, and how to handle a firearm in a safer and less intimidating way. Also, the P365 allows you to train at home for those times you can’t make it to the range.

Unlike dry fire solutions, the P365 airgun has a reciprocating slide and some actual recoil. The slide is slower and the recoil nowhere near as harsh, but it delivers a more tactile experience. The slide’s movement allows you to practice sight tracking and stay sharper than any dry fire experience. If you are a SIG P365 owner, I think this airgun is a must-have for training.

The P365 airgun runs off of CO2 and is a semi-automatic design. The magazine holds 12 BBs, which is accurate for the P365. The magazine also houses the 12-gram CO2 cartridge that powers the gun for about 150 shots. The slide locks to the rear when the weapon is empty and mimics the controls of the P365 to a T.

It might be worth noting that there are some small differences between the P365 Air Gun and the actual P365.

Trigger

The trigger is a consistent one, but the trigger pull is longer than a P365’s trigger. The reset is also extremely long, and much longer than the P365’s reset. The trigger isn’t heavy, and is relatively light, and moves smoothly.

The Sights

The P365 ships with metal three-dot night sights. The P365 has three-dot plastic sights with no nighttime glow. Not a big deal by any means. The sights look like the P365 sights, and that's what matters most.

Safety

The P365 comes with or without manual safety. The airgun model only comes with safety. So if you are like me and have a non-safety model, your best bet is to leave the safety disengaged while training.

Reliability and Long Term Use

The good news is the P365 air gun is very reliable, and over 1,000 bbs later, I’ve yet to have any issues. The gun goes pop pop until the CO2 runs dead. It typically lasts for 10 to 12 magazines but may expire sooner, depending on the temperature. The little P365 Air gun is good to go and set up to survive.

The P365 Air Gun is well designed, easy to use, and capable of being a fantastic training aid. You know what? It’s also a fun little BB gun. Outside of all that serious training, it’s a fun gun for adults, kids, and everyone else.
