On purchasing Ammo
There are two background checks in California for purchase ammunition. The $1 Standard Check (immediate answer, go/no go with the ammo) and the $19 Basic Check (you apply and what, these days up to 2 weeks, to get approved then you can buy the ammunition and take it home.) If you have purchased a firearm in the last 7 years, you will be in the CA DOJ Automated Firearm System (AFS) and you can do the $1 check. If you haven’t then you will have to do the slower $19 check.
3 Different ID’s
So there are currently three types of California Drivers license / ID out there. First is the Pre-REAL ID, we call it the Legacy ID, which has nothing in the upper right hand corner. Second is the REAL-ID which has the Golden Bear in the upper right hand corner, and lastly is the “Federal Limits Apply” ID which has those three words printed in the your right front of the card. The first two require no additional form of Proof of Residency (US Citizenship), the third does. You will need a Birth Certificate or Passport to prove US Citizenship.
Real ID
No a REAL ID is not required. If you have the Pre-REAL ID (nothing in the upper right hand corner) you are good. If you have “Federal Limits Apply” (FLA) in the upper right hand corner then you will need to produce a U.S. Passport or a Birth Certificate with you. We recommend that you take a picture of either with your smartphone if you need the birth certificate or passport and when you buy ammo you just email us the picture and we add it to the copy your FLA license. Since the State of California legislature passed the law allowing illegal aliens to get their California Drivers License, they have to print that FLA in the upper corner because you don’t have to provide proof of citizenship to get a CDL.
