SCR Lower Receiver - 50 State Legal AR Option

12/08/2022

While gun control is purely unconstitutional, the industry has always been willing to respond with products that defeat and defuse the silliness of gun control laws. The AR 15 is an oft-targeted firearm that gets a bad rap, and its features are often banned by state-level assault weapon bans. With that in mind, Fightlite designed the SCR lower receiver and rifle systems. SCR stands for Sport Configurable Rifle, but it might as well stand for State Compliant Rifle. You see, the SCR is the first AR 15 lower than is 50 state compliant.

The SCR Lower - How It’s Different

As you can see, the SCR lower is different. Where a normal stock and grip would live, we see a Remington 870 style monte carlo stock. This eliminates the adjustable stock and pistol grip restrictions numerous states have in place. It also provides a comfortable and proven stock for exceptional performance.

The stock gives the rifle entirely different handling characteristics. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s just different. You may be asking yourself, how does the buffer system come into play? Without a receiver extension, how does it all work? Well, it still has a buffer built into the stock. It’s smaller than normal but equipped with a powerful spring that ensures reliable operation. The key to its function is the specialized bolt carrier group. The BCG uses a regular AR bolt with a rat tail design that mates with the redesigned minimalized buffer.

The lower receiver has also be changed a bit. The safety is replaced with an 870 style push-button design that works surprisingly well. Other than that, the magazine release and bolt catch are all AR 15.

How Its the Same

The SCR Lower will accommodate any mil-spec standard upper receiver. The SCR can come as both a complete rifle or a lower receiver. The SCR will accommodate those without issue and allow you to handle any cartridge that uses a mil-spec bolt.

The end result is a very lightweight rifle that’s quick and handy to shoulder. The built-in buffer does a great job of reducing recoil, and the rifle is very soft shooting. The SCR is perfectly suited for any AR 15 rifle role. This includes home defense, hunting, competition, and more. It’s plenty accurate with a fantastic trigger. Due to the stock design, you have to use a low mount for optics.

It can use any standard AR magazine, and since state laws vary on compliance, you can use five rounders, ten rounders, 30 rounders, or even 60 round Magpul drums. The little lower can use various magazine releases and bolt locks, but the trigger is set, as is the safety. Those are proprietary parts.

It’s an odd design, but it’s effective. It’s remarkably reliable and fun to shoot. I live in a free state without onerous firearm restrictions, and I own one just for the cool factor.

To Hell With Gun Control

Gun control sucks, and while we continually fight gun control in the courts, the industry acts as a stop-gap to provide shooters in less free states options. The SCR is the first 50 state legal AR option that doesn’t look like complete garbage. It’s more than a compromise, though. It’s a fun, reliable, accurate, and all-around excellent design.
