KelTec SUB 2K - The Folding Carbine

12/08/2022

The PCC craze we are experiencing is an interesting one, but oddly enough, the Sub 2000 premiered well before PCCs were popular. This little gun has clung along before the fad was in and was always a popular gun. The reason being is that KelTec designed a darn cool rifle. The Sub 2000 comes in both 9mm and 40 S&W, utilizes popular pistol magazines, and folds in half!

The Folding Design

The Sub 2000’s most prominent and most remarkable feature is the folding design. The user can effectively cut the gun’s length in half and makes it easy to store and transport pistol caliber carbine. To do so, you unlock the trigger guard and push it forward; then, the barrel separates from the receiver. It folds and locks to a clip on the stock.

It’s quick to fold and unfold and does so with ease. The rifle cannot be fired when folded or have a round in the chamber. Always clear and unload the weapon before attempting to fold the gun.

The Travelers PCC

The Sub 2000 excels in a lot of fields. It’s a lot of fun to shoot and is relatively soft shooting. It’s super lightweight and quite short. The design is perfect for plinking and even home defense. Where I see a lot of utility for the Sub 2000 is among those, who like to travel via road trip or the great outdoors.

The Sub 2000 is an excellent vehicle gun because its ability to be folded and easily stored and hidden. The weapon fits easily in a trunk or backseat, or anywhere you can safely and legally carry the gun. It’s perfect for those traveling in an RV who require a little extra firepower for their defensive needs.

For those hiking and humping throughout the great outdoors, the Sub 2000 offers you a greater degree of firepower than any handgun. This makes it more capable for defensive use against four-legged critters. It squeezes in a backpack, is relatively light, and is perfect for hiking or camping.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics of the Sub 2000 are admittedly weird. That’s the problem with a gun that folds in half. That being said, they aren’t too bad. The magazine fits into the pistol grip, and the magazine release is very pistol-like. It’s quick and straightforward. The safety is a push-button cross-bolt design that’s a bit awkward but useable.

The Gen 2 model has a three-position stock to change the length of pull and a thin M-LOK handguard. It’s a comfortable weapon to grip and fire. The handguard is slim but never seems to heat up when fired rapidly and extensively.

The biggest downside is the charging handle. The Sub 2000 is a blowback gun, and it requires a hefty spring and bolt to function correctly. The spring is stiff, and this makes charging the weapon quickly challenging.

Range Time

The Sub 2000 has a lackluster trigger, but it’s not bad enough to degrade your accuracy overall. It’s stiff and spongy with a long reset. The recoil is not significant, but as a blowback-operated weapon, it has a distinctive bump when the gun is fired.

The sights are quite robust. The front sight is an AR-type post, and the rear is a peep sight that allows for excellent precision. Inside of 50 yards, you can quickly ring steel and pop off headshots. The little rifle can shoot rather well for a PCC.

The Sub 2000 is also very reliable. The straight blowback action does an excellent job of allowing the gun to function without complaint properly. It eats everything I’ve ever put through it. The Sub 2000 is a perfect example of forward-thinking design mixed with simplicity
