Are you prepared for an event such as a wildfire, earthquake or extended power outage? Are you properly prepared just for a simple hike, camping or hunting trip? Do you know what you should have, how much you should have, and where you should store what? We can help you become more prepared.

Being prepared for the unexpected makes all the difference between being able to survive in tolerable misery or relative comfort. We have seen both and prefer the latter. Investing in good emergency stores of food, survival kits, medical supplies and even a survival blanket to stave off the cold. Peace of mind doesn’t have to be expensive, just think of it as an investment you make when times are good for when times aren’t.
Today, with our reliance on technology there are more and more events that can cause major disruptions to our everyday lives. Remember the pandemic restrictions? Extended power outages due to weather or wildfire? Don't get caught when the food, water and necessities (toilet paper) have been cleaned out of your local stores. Remember the old saying "...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"?

Eddie Ford / Instructor - During his 20-year career in the United States Navy, Eddie has endured natural disasters from hurricanes to ice storms and had to learn the hard way what it takes to endure. He has been trained and served as a Red Cross Shelter Manager and Disaster Preparedness Officer for two U.S. Navy Commands. His approach to preparedness is,“Knowledge can be taken wherever you go and that being prepared gets you there faster.”

Part 1 – Why be prepared? The simple act of thinking about preparedness, such as a disaster preparedness plan, reduces the time it takes to make critical decisions when seconds matter. Knowing which actions you will take, depending on the situation, makes all the difference in your state of mind and ability to act. From Natural Disasters to manmade disasters, we will cover what the repercussions and consequences to understand how to prepare yourself both mentally and materially.

Part 2 – Food and Water - Ok so this is the basic tenet of surviving. We will discuss what options you have for stockpiling various types of food/nutritional items to get you through the initial phases of disaster recovery. We will discuss the importance of storing or creating fresh water when the tap goes dry. No one wants to drink contaminated water and deal with what that brings. We will get you on track to self-reliance.

Part 3 – Hygiene and Medical – One of the most dangerous factors in a disaster scenario is the risk of injury, infection, or illness. We will talk about ways to keep as clean and healthy as possible when our normal routines are disrupted. If the worst happens and you are forced to deal with an injury, be prepared to stop bleeding and treat the wound. This is not a stop the bleed type class, we will discuss the materials you will need to gather to ensure you are as ready as you can be when we no longer have access to professional medical care.

Part 4 – Shelter and Warmth – It is inevitable when disaster strikes, there will be power outages. Whether it is summer or winter, your home will not be at a comfortable temperature. If you cannot stay in your home, you will need to consider what clothing to carry to keep you comfortable. We will discuss options for staying out of the elements and for maintaining a tolerable level of comfort.

Part 5 – Locations and Transportation – If the worst happens and you must leave your home, where will you go? Where do you meet up with loved ones or your group? How can you get there? We will discuss the primary modes of transportation and maybe some you haven’t considered.

Part 6 – Communications - Communication is often overlooked when we think of surviving. When you add more than yourself to the equation, communication becomes crucial. We will discuss a few of the readily available modes of communication and how you can best use them to enhance your situation.
