CA Ammo Purchase Requirements

05/27/2023
On purchasing Ammo There are two background checks in California for purchase ammunition. The $1 Standard Check (immediate answer, go/no go with the ammo) and the $19 Basic Check (you apply and what, these days up to 2 weeks, to get approved then you can buy the ammunition and take it home.) If you have purchased a firearm in the last 7 years, you will be in the CA DOJ Automated Firearm System (AFS) and you can do the $1 check. If you haven’t then you will have to do the slower $19 check.  3 Different ID’s So there are currently three types of California Drivers license / ID  out there. First is the Pre-REAL ID, we call it the Legacy ID, which has nothing in the upper right hand corner. Second is the REAL-ID which has the Golden Bear ...  Read More

What is this California Roster of Handguns you speak of?

05/05/2023
The State of California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. One of the main components of California’s crackdown on guns is what we often refer to as the “California Roster” or just “The Roster”. With all the news lately about two of the challenges to the Roster in court not going the way that the State of California would hope I thought we could talk a little about the evolution of the California’s Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.   Back on November 2nd, 1983, California mandated registering handguns with the State of California after the passage Proposition 15. Then in 1999, the California Legislature passed the Unsafe Handgun Act, which was enacted in 2001 with the requirements for the Loaded Chamber Indicator an...  Read More

What is a "Prop" gun? Are they safe?

12/08/2022
What is a “Prop” Gun? Are they safe? There is a lot of buzz in the media concerning a recent incident on a movie set of a “prop” gun firing and killing a crew member and injuring another. Which begs to question exactly what is a “prop” gun? Dictionary.com defines a prop as “…a usually movable item, other than costumes or scenery, used on the set of a theater production, motion picture, etc.; any object handled or used by an actor in a performance.” Theater property is anything not considered a “set piece” or an actor/actress. Whether it is a replica (rubber, plastic, wood, metal), a simulated firing non-lethal projectile (plastic pellets a.k.a “airsoft”) or actual working firearms (unloaded, loaded with blanks, or loaded with live ammu...  Read More

More will come. UPDATE: California has appealed the decision and now it moves to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. It will likely sit here while the Supreme Court prepares to make a decision on the case backed...  Read More

SIG P365 Airgun

12/08/2022
If I’ve learned anything about being a gun owner, it’s that the market is finicky. Sometimes ammo goes dry, and it can be tough to keep your skills sharp. Luckily, when that’s the case, you can turn to some alternative options. This includes dry fire, laser-fired devices, and airguns. Yep, airguns. SIG, in particular, pays a lot of attention to the airgun market. Their ever-popular P365 pistol has been successfully replicated as an airgun—specifically a 4.5 mm BB gun.     The SIG P365 Air gun is almost a perfect 1 for 1 replica for the real P365. The airgun fits P365 holsters perfectly, and in terms of length, height, and width, it’s a perfect replica. It is about 4 ounces lighter than the real thing. At first glance, the P365 Air Gun ...  Read More

They can be used on handguns, shotguns, rifles, and even piggybacked on magnified rifle scopes. One contender on the block might be the very best mini red dot sight on the market, and it comes from a surprising company. The Holosun 507C V2 is a real contender for the most versatile mini red dot sight.     What Sets It Apart?   The Holosun 507C is a mini red dot sight that packs three different reticle options. These three reticles include a simple red dot, a 32 MOA circle, and a 32 MOA circle and dot. The bigger 32 MOA reticles are quicker to acquire and well suited on shotguns and handg...  Read More

Mossberg 500 vs Remington 870

12/08/2022
Mossberg 500 vs Remington 870 Mossberg and Remington are both companies well known for their shotguns. The Mossberg 500/590 series and the Remington 870 are both classic firearms that act as flagship weapons for their respective companies. Both are pump-action, magazine tube-fed shotguns with a long history behind each of them. This inevitably leads to a potential shotgun shopper to ask which is better? So let’s dig in and help you make that decision. Durability and Materials The Mossberg 500/590 series uses an aluminum receiver with a steel barrel. The Remington 870 uses a heavier steel receiver. Steel is stronger than aluminum, but aluminum will not rust. The big question is, does it matter? I’ve never seen an aluminum Mossberg receiv...  Read More

Mossberg 590A1

12/08/2022
Military shotguns are always a fascinating topic. Shotguns are never mainline infantry weapons, but when called upon, are an unbeatable option. The Mossberg 590A1 is the military's pump-action shotgun of choice, and its seen combat across the world, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why is the Mossberg 590A1 the military's choice? Well, let's see. Unbeatable Dependability The Mossberg 500 series is the only shotgun to pass the U.S. Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test. This test requires 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot and is a brutal test. It takes shotguns to the edge of their performance and then gives them a little more push. The Mossberg survived and passed the test without fault. The 590A1 is a spectacular shotgun with unbeat...  Read More

SCR Lower Receiver - 50 State Legal AR Option

12/08/2022
While gun control is purely unconstitutional, the industry has always been willing to respond with products that defeat and defuse the silliness of gun control laws. The AR 15 is an oft-targeted firearm that gets a bad rap, and its features are often banned by state-level assault weapon bans. With that in mind, Fightlite designed the SCR lower receiver and rifle systems. SCR stands for Sport Configurable Rifle, but it might as well stand for State Compliant Rifle. You see, the SCR is the first AR 15 lower than is 50 state compliant. The SCR Lower - How It’s Different As you can see, the SCR lower is different. Where a normal stock and grip would live, we see a Remington 870 style monte carlo stock. This eliminates the adjustable stock ...  Read More

KelTec SUB 2K - The Folding Carbine

12/08/2022
The PCC craze we are experiencing is an interesting one, but oddly enough, the Sub 2000 premiered well before PCCs were popular. This little gun has clung along before the fad was in and was always a popular gun. The reason being is that KelTec designed a darn cool rifle. The Sub 2000 comes in both 9mm and 40 S&W, utilizes popular pistol magazines, and folds in half!     The Folding Design   The Sub 2000’s most prominent and most remarkable feature is the folding design. The user can effectively cut the gun’s length in half and makes it easy to store and transport pistol caliber carbine. To do so, you unlock the trigger guard and push it forward; then, the barrel separates from the receiver. It folds and locks to a clip on the sto...  Read More

Best Military and Survival Knives

12/08/2022
Military and survival knives are working tools, tools made to take abuse and to dish it out. A military or survival knife needs to be a fixed blade with a full tang for maximum strength. A military and survival knife needs to be able to do basic knife tasks, skin game, baton wood, strike a ferrous rod, dig, and chop. That’s a mighty larger list of qualifications, and finding a knife that meets them all is kind of tricky. So I did it for you and listed my five favorite military and survival knives.     5 - SEAL Pup Elite   The SOG SEAL Pup Elite is a purpose-built military knife designed specifically for spec ops guys. The SOG SEAL Pup Elite offers you a compact 4.85-inch blade made from AUS-8. This Japanese steel is ultra-strong and c...  Read More

The CZ 75 B - A Cold War Classic

12/08/2022
As far as handguns go in the United States, there are a few sacred cows. We have the Colt Python, the 1911, the Glock 19, and the S&W Model 36. All are appreciated and beloved handguns, but one more deserves to join those ranks, and it’s the CZ 75. The CZ 75 is a Czechoslovakian pistol designed and created in 1975. The gun was developed under a secret patent only applicable in the Soviet Union, and sales to the states were happening at the time. The CZ 75 is the most copied firearm globally and has been cloned and recreated for decades due to the patent failure of the Soviet Union.   Inside the CZ 75  Why is it copied everywhere from Israel to Turkey and beyond? Because the design is brilliant. The CZ 75 owes its existence to two...  Read More

Home Defense Shotgun Essentials

12/08/2022
The home defense shotgun is a powerful tool for the armed individual to defend what’s theirs with. When it comes to choosing a home defense shotgun, you have dozens of applicable options. Picking a shotgun is only the first step; next is outfitting it for success. A regular shotgun works, but there are some essentials it must have before being tasked with home defense. Here are your home defense shotgun essentials.     A Light   A home defense shotgun must have a light. A light is necessary to establish proper identification of a potential threat. Without a light, you may not be able to safely establish the difference between a bad guy breaking in and a cat knocking a pot over.     Lights on shotguns can be tricky, but my two first ...  Read More

The KelTec KS7 - Bullpups Bite

12/08/2022
KelTec loves making weird and innovative firearms. Their rifles, pistols, and shotguns tend to be unique weapons. The KelTec KS7 is their latest 12 gauge shotgun. The KS7 is my first experience with a KelTec shotgun, and admittedly, as a shotgun nerd, I was excited. The KS7 is a bullpup design with a lot of love to give.     Why A Bullpup?   Bullpups are great for saving space. A shotgun works best when it's short, and the KS7 is superbly short and doesn't require a tax stamp. The short design makes it perfect for home defense, and the KS7 is a short 26.10 inches. That is short as you can legally get without becoming an NFA weapon. This makes the gun perfect for inside the house use due to it's increased mobility.     Breaking Down ...  Read More

Top 5 Home Defense Shotguns

12/07/2022
The show-stopping shotgun has long been a staple of home defense. The shotgun offers the most lead possible per trigger pull for a shoulder-fired firearm. They are brutal at close range, and that’s one of the main reasons the shotgun is so popular for home defense. With so many different shotguns out there, we wanted to provide you with 5 of the best home defense shotguns.     Mossberg 590A1   The Mossberg 590A1 lives a beastly life in service with every branch of the United States military and in the hands of hundreds of police forces. This is Mossberg’s premier combat shotgun and has proven itself time and time again as a word-class pump-action shotgun. The 590A1 features a thick-walled barrel that’s 18 to 20 inches long, a metal tr...  Read More
